The Little Poison Dart Frog

Once upon a time there was a poison dart frog. Dendrobatidae, if you want to get scientific.

The poison dart frog is different from others, because this poison dart frog is not really a poison dart frog. She actually just a dart frog. No poison at all.

The poison dart frog can’t go home.

No, not as long as she is not poisonous, because her family’s poison could kill her. This makes her sad. She misses her family. So the poison dart frog decides to find a way to become poisonous.

She travels to a nest of coral snakes, near the river.

“Hello, coral snakes,” the poison dart frog says.

“Hello,” the snakes reply. “What brings you to our home, little poison dart frog?”

“I am not really poisonous. Can you help me become poisonous?”

“No, little not-poison dart frog. Coral snakes are not poisonous, they are venomous.”

“Oh, okay. Thank you anyway.” The poison dart frog leaves the nest of coral snakes. She travels to a bullet ant nest.

“Hello, bullet ants,” the poison dart frog says.

“Hello,” the ants reply. “What brings you to our home, little poison dart frog?”

“I am not really poisonous. Can you help me become poisonous?”

“No, little not-poison dart frog. Bullet ants are not poisonous, they are venomous.”

“Oh, okay. Thank you anyway.” The poison dart frog leaves the nest of bullet ants. She travels to the web of a brown recluse spider.

“Hello, brown recluse,” the poison dart frog says.

“Hello,” the spider replies. “What brings you to my home, little poison dart frog?”

“I am not really poisonous. Can you help me become poisonous?”

“No, little not-poison dart frog. Brown recluse spiders are not poisonous, they are venomous.”

“Oh, okay. Thank you anyway.” The poison dart frog leaves the web of the brown recluse spider. She travels to the patch of flowers a Heliconius butterfly often visits.

“Hello, Heliconius butterfly,” the poison dart frog says.

“Hello,” the Heliconius butterfly replies. “What brings you here, little poison dart frog?”

“I am not really poisonous. Can you help me become poisonous?”

“Why, little poison dart frog, do you want to be poisonous?” The Heliconius butterfly asks.

“Because I miss my family, and I cannot go home if I am not poisonous.” The poison dart frog replies.

“What makes you think that?”

“Well, won’t their poison kill me?”

“Little poison dart frog, just because you do not make the same poison as your family does not mean you are not immune to it! Go home, little poison dart frog. Go to your family.” The Heliconius butterfly flies away. The little poison dart frog hops home as fast as she can.

When she gets there, she finds the coral snakes, bullet ants, and brown recluse spider waiting.

“Hello there, friends. Are you here to welcome me home?” The poison dart frog says.

“No,” they all reply, “we are here to eat you. If you are not poisonous, then you cannot kill us!”

The coral snakes, bullet ants, and brown recluse spider all went home with full bellies and they lived happily ever after.

The end.
